Why you shouldn’t put your fridge near an oven and other heating appliances

Putting a refrigerator near an oven and other heating appliances is a common mistake people make. There is a need to note that after getting your appliance, where you place it is important and contributes to the life span of the appliance.

Every appliance has its do’s and don’ts; this is why it’s always better to have a professional appliance specialist install your new appliances. You will be able to get an expert’s opinion about where to install the appliance and how to maintain the appliance.

The refrigerator is a crucial appliance unit in your kitchen. It stores your groceries and keeps your food preserved and fresh. It’s a high-risk appliance in the sense that you don’t want your refrigerator to suddenly break down when you have perishables worth thousands of dollars stored in it. This is why you need to take proper care of everything from the installation to maintenance and to any repair service that it might need.
Where you place or install your refrigerator can help it function effectively for a long time or a re-occurring breakdown. Putting your refrigerator near any appliance that produces heat, like the oven, will cause it to overheat and the heat from the oven reaches the refrigerator.

This will make the refrigerator’s compressor overwork in a bid to keep the fridge cool and it will consume more power in the process. Too much heat from another appliance like the stove, will cause damages to some exterior parts of the fridge and sometimes the circuits of fridges that have their refrigeration circuit on the side.

How to Manage the Space or Arrangement of Your Fridge with Heat Producing Appliances

  • Fridge and oven

Always put a partition between your oven and your fridge so that the heat from the oven doesn’t affect the fridge. If your oven is built-in then the partition will already be there.
Ensuring that there is a partition is important. This is because the doors of the two appliances might be interfering with each other.
It happens this way because the fridge is a naturally busy spot in the kitchen and if you are someone that bakes often then the oven will also be a busy spot for you. It is better to keep enough space between them for easy use of both appliances.

Fridge repair

  • Fridge and oven

Putting your stove directly near the fridge is the most dangerous fridge placement kind. This combination is worse if you are using a gas stove. Your electric stove should be placed in at least 3cm to 5cm distance away from the fridge while your gas stove should be placed in at least 30cm to 50cm away from the fridge.

Apart from the fact that your stove consistently produces heat that can affect the fridge, splatters of grease from the food you are cooking will land on the fridge continuously, soiling it and it could cause the exterior to start wearing out with time.

It will also make cooking inconvenient as there won’t be enough space for handles of pots and pans placed on the stovetops closest to the fridge.

If your kitchen is so small and it’s not possible for you to keep a distance between your stove and your fridge then you should use a self-adhesive, heat-insulating sheet on the wall of the fridge. Using a very effective range hood also helps as it will take up the smoke or heat from the stove almost immediately.

You can also use plywood or tempered glass partition between the stove and the refrigerator or get the fridge installed in a wooden frame.

  • Fridge and Microwave

Most individuals place their microwaves on the fridge in their kitchen. This is not entirely a bad arrangement but it is necessary to note that both the microwave and the fridge require proper ventilation across their back and top to function effectively.

If the microwave is placed on the fridge and there is enough room for ventilation for the two appliances then there will be no problem. One way to make room for ventilation for the bottom of the microwave and the top of the fridge is to place the microwave on legs.

Taking proper precautions when it comes to the placement of appliances isn’t just for the maintenance of the appliance, but for your own safety, because putting two appliances together that can cause overheating while functioning can also lead to a fire hazard. It’s better to do what it takes to keep our home safe while your appliances run smoothly.
