HOW TO STOP AWFUL SMELL FROM APPLIANCES.

It is important to note that after constant use of your appliances, they will sometimes breakdown or give off an awful smell. These odours can be caused by different reasons and can be also dangerous to your health.

Your refrigerator can give off an unpleasant smell if you leave the stale vegetables in for long. Forgetting to dispose leftovers allows growth and accumulation of mould and bacteria.

Same way, a dishwasher with a clogged drain, filter, or pipe will accumulate dirty water and food debris that goes stale and give a rancid smell.

It is necessary to clean appliances and take proper care of them, so they don’t produce bad odour which in turn makes your house smelly.

Here are some tips on why some of your appliances may smell awful and how to stop this situation.

KITCHEN APPLIANCES

1. Taking Care of your Refrigerator.

Leaving a perishable sensitive product for a long time in your fridge allows the build-up of mould and bacteria. The presence of significant moisture makes your fridge their ideal abode. Stale and soggy food; expired food will accommodate bacteria and contribute greatly to a smelly refrigerator.

Not cleaning your fridge often, will make the smell worse.

To clean your fridge, unplug it from a power outlet. Remove everything and trash expired or spoiled products. Take the racks and drawers out. Dip them in hot water and vinegar or dish soap. Wipe soot and food stains from jars and containers.

Now, clean the refrigerator using a solution of baking soda and vinegar.  They are natural products efficient in absorbing odours and lifting off stains. Wipe the fridge from top to bottom and use a small brush to clean minute spaces where dirt might be clogged.

Rinse your cloth with warm water, then wipe the baking soda. Wipe the excess moisture from your racks and drawers before replacing them. Let your refrigerator cool up before returning items.

To prevent a stinky refrigerator in the future, place a cotton ball soaked with vanilla inside the fridge to keep it smelling good. Also, dispose leftovers in airtight containers.

2. Removing your Dishwasher Odour

Smelly washer makes you feel the dishes are not clean enough. An unpleasant smell will sour your mood for the day until it goes away. To make the awful smell in a dishwasher go away, knowing the source of the smell is necessary.

Check for mould build-up in the inner walls. Leaving your damp dishwasher closed for an extended period will allow moulds to grow in your washer, giving it an awful smell. Check the pipes and drain filter to ensure proper drainage. Stagnant, dirty, dishwater would produce foul odour once the particles in it start to decompose.

Clean the filter properly. Dirt particles can clog the arm, too. So clean it properly. Wipe your dishwasher with soapy, hot water. Clean gasket for accumulated grease and grime, too.

Perform a normal wash cycle with vinegar in a dish on the top rack of your dishwasher. Run another cycle after pouring baking soda on the bottom of your washer. This will remove the odour from the washer. Clean the filter regularly and scrape plates before loading them into the washer.

3. Getting the Odour out of your Microwave

No matter how pleasant your oven smells like, the smell turns unpleasant eventually. Clean your microwave before that happens.

If the odour remains, a citrus fruit should do the trick.

Divide the lemon into two half and place the fruit into two different cups of water and place them in your microwave for about 2mins-4mins. Check frequently so that the bowl doesn’t get dried up and the citrus doesn’t burn. Close the microwave door for about twelve hours.

This will get the odour removed.

4. Eliminating Awful Smell from Your Washing Machine.

Accumulation of grime, soap scum, dirt, slime, or bacteria can result in your laundry room being smelly. There are ways to prevent this from happening or eliminating the smell that builds up as a result of not taking caution at the right time.

To clean your washing machine, pour two cups of distilled vinegar into the detergent dispenser. Run washer using hot water. Once the cycle is complete, clean the inside of your tub, the detergent dispenser using a clean wash towel or rag and a solution of hot water and vinegar. This will break down any residue stuck and kill mould or bacteria that present.

If odour persists, check drain pipes and filter to ensure stuck residue and dirty water are properly cleaned.

Clean the insides of your washer regularly, allow it to air dry before closing doors, and ensure all parts function properly to prevent any unwelcome smell in the future.

5. Get the bad odour out of your dryer.

Just like every other appliance we have mentioned so far, it is important to clean your dryer. Apart from the fact that not cleaning it causes the production of bad odour, using a dirty dryer to dry clothes that you just washed will eventually make the cloth dirty.

Avoid leaving damp cloth in your dryer to avoid mould and fungi growth. Ensure that your dryer is completely drained and dried after every cycle before closing it up and leaving it.

To ensure that it’s properly cleaned you need to specifically clean its lint screen and trap. Cleaning off the lint using a dry rag and vacuuming the trap with your vacuum hoes helps to remove any wet lint that could be causing a mouldy smell.

You can also use vinegar which is very effective in removing bad odour. Spray some towels with vinegar and place the towels in the dryer and run a normal drying cycle. This will douse out any bad smell.
