How to Find the Perfect Family Freezer

For someone who lives a very busy life and doesn’t have so much time to shop for groceries consistently, your freezer will be a key appliance in your kitchen.

With a well-functioning freezer, you only need to go grocery shopping a few times, and those few times will be times for massive shopping as you will most likely want to get all that your family will need for a long time at once.

If your family size is huge, the small freezer section of a refrigerator will not work for storing a large amount of perishables. As your family grows, you begin to see the need for a larger size of an independent freezer.

Now that you see the need for a big sized freezer, you will have to choose the type of freezer that is perfect for your family. Will a chest freezer do? Or will an upright freezer be better? You should be able to make a sound decision after reading through the pros and cons of these two freezers.

The Chest freezer or the Upright Freezer

Your decision on the type of freezer that is perfect for your family will be based on your preference on some factors like

Energy Usage: The chest freezer consumes less energy as compared to the upright freezer. This is because most chest freezers do not have the automatic defrost feature. The upright freezer which has an automatic defrost feature will use more energy to get this done.

The chest freezer also uses less energy because it’s able to keep itself cool for a longer time than the upright freezer.

Space: The chest freezer is spacious than the upright freezer.

For a chest freezer, you also have to consider the entrance to the space you have in mind. Sometimes people need to remove a door or two to get their chest freezer to a pre-planned position.

For the upright freezer, which is usually the size of a refrigerator, you will need to ensure that your planned space has enough room for opening the door.

  • Storage space: The chest freezer can store more food and because it doesn’t have drawers and racks. It can accommodate large containers with irregular shapes. This might not work with the upright freezer as you might need to remove one or two racks or drawers to be able to fit in containers with irregular shapes.
  • Organization and ease: The upright freezer which comes with shelves, racks, and drawers is easier to organize.
With the chest freezer, it is difficult to see items that are at the bottom of the freezer. It’s also difficult to rearrange without having to remove most of the items in the freezer first. Unlike the Upright freezer where you can stand to remove or put anything in, you have to bend to do everything in a chest freezer.

  • Running sound: An upright freezer with an automatic defrost feature will make loud running sounds while performing its function, while the chest freezer runs quietly.

  • Exterior Colour: Most chest freezers have the usual white color exception to a few which comes as stainless steel with black finishing. The upright freezers have both black and white colours and can sometimes come in red colour.

  • Cost: The chest freezer is less expensive than the upright freezer. Prizes of upright freezer vary on the size, capacity, and whether it has the automatic defrost feature or if defrosting has to be done manually.

When you consider the capacity, space, energy usage, organization, ease of use, and the cost, you should be able to choose which of these freezer suits your family and lifestyle best.
